Dance Conservatory
Launched in the fall of 2013, the Oxford Dance Conservatory is a program designed to prepare students for future success in college and professional dance. Offered during both 1st and 2nd periods, the conservatory provides rigorous training and a comprehensive curriculum.
Students are placed into either the intermediate or advanced level by instructors and focus on two core dance genres: Ballet and Modern. Additionally, students have opportunities to explore other styles such as Jazz, Hip Hop, Ballroom, and Cultural Dances.
The program goes beyond technical training to provide essential skills often overlooked in traditional dance studios. Students delve into the history and theory of dance while developing creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities. Opportunities to choreograph and teach are integral parts of the curriculum, further preparing students for their next steps in dance.
Performance is a key aspect of the program. Throughout the year, students participate in several showcases, including joint performances with dance majors from Oakland University. This unique partnership provides our dancers with master classes and networking opportunities, helping them explore colleges and dance-related careers.
One standout feature of the Oxford Dance Conservatory is that students can receive up to 12 hours of weekly dance instruction at no cost. This makes our program one of the few of its kind available to high school students.
Dance Company
The dance company rehearses after school on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:00–5:00 PM. While it is open to conservatory students, participation is selective, and only a portion of conservatory dancers are chosen. Company members perform in additional, high-profile events and must demonstrate a strong commitment to their craft.
Auditions
Auditions for the dance conservatory take place at the end of each semester. Keep an eye out for flyers with more information, or contact Mrs. Brewer or Ms. Stavropoulos if you are interested.
Movement for Stage and Dance
This course is open to all students, regardless of experience or ability. No audition or prerequisites are required—just a willingness to have fun and learn!
Students in this class are introduced to a variety of dance styles, offering a broad overview of the dance world. The course serves as an excellent introduction for those looking to explore dance or develop skills for joining the conservatory. It also complements other performing arts, such as theater and choir.
Mandatory performances are part of the course, allowing students to showcase what they’ve learned. Whether taken as a fun elective or as a stepping stone to more advanced training, this course is a valuable opportunity for any student.
