October 4, Follow Up to OMS Incident

Dear Community Members,

In follow up to yesterday’s (October 3) email about the discharge of a weapon at OMS, I wanted to give you some further details.

  • The incident occurred before the first lunch at OMS.
  • There were no students nearby as lunches had not started and the students who had physical education that hour were in the gym.
  • The bathroom being used was a staff bathroom located by the fieldhouse (gym) or the end of the school where parents pick up and drop off.
  • The individual involved is not an employee of Eternal Security Services (ESS), but he is an employee with Oxford Community Schools.
  • The individual’s job responsibilities involved providing additional safety and security with the school resource officer at Oxford Middle School.
  • The individual involved was placed on leave yesterday, October 3, 2022. The district is continuing to investigate the matter and will take appropriate actions.

While this individual has faithfully served our students and community for the last five years, the careless handling of a firearm is inexcusable. The district will be reviewing all policies and procedures and we will ensure that all security staff understand and comply with the proper handling of firearms. The safety of all children is our top priority.

Sincerely,
Ken Weaver
Superintendent
