Oct. 2 Positive COVID-19 Case at OMS

October 2, 2020

Dear Parent/Guardian,

We have been notified of a confirmed COVID-19 case at Oxford Middle School. The positive case was a student and has not been present since Tuesday, September 29. We appreciate that the family kept the mildly symptomatic student home and quickly communicated positive test results. Thanks to our diligent administrators and staff, we acted promptly this morning and early afternoon to send home those students in session that we expected the Oakland County Health Division to quarantine. We appreciate that those affected families were able to be responsive and parents quickly retrieved their children in this inconvenient situation.

Our regularly scheduled classes will continue and, if you do not receive a specific quarantine notice as well as a phone call from a school administrator, your child can attend school as scheduled. The affected classrooms on the positive student’s schedule have undergone extensive disinfecting treatment as an additional precaution. Parents of students in each of those classrooms will receive a limited exposure notice; but, they will have no action items.

COVID- 19 is a contagious viral illness that spreads in the air through coughing, sneezing, and talking. Recent information suggests COVID-19 is spread by people who are not showing symptoms. It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it, then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes. Symptoms include fever, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea.

Please watch your child for any symptoms of COVID-19 through October 13. If your child does develop symptoms, we urge you to get your child tested for COVID-19. Testing locations can be found using the COVID-19 Test Finder at https://www.michigan.gov/coronavirus. If your child tests positive for COVID-19 or is symptomatic and you do not wish to have them tested, keep him or her at home until they have been fever free for at least 24 hours and it has been more than ten days since the initial onset of symptoms.
