Oct. 7 Confirmed COVID Cases at OMS

October 7, 2020

Dear Parent/Guardian,

The Oakland County Health Division (OCHD) has confirmed two additional COVID-19 cases at Oxford Middle School. These reports bring our total of confirmed OMS cases to four at this time. Both recent positive cases were students. The third case was last present in school Thursday, October 1 and did not present any risk of exposure in school. The fourth case was last present in school Monday, October 5 and presented some level of exposure in school. Parents of students in each of the attended classrooms will receive a limited exposure notice; but, they will have no action items (no need to quarantine). Any close contacts will be communicated with directly—by both OCHD and Oxford administration—to arrange quarantine.

The entire school building has undergone extensive disinfecting treatments as an additional precaution. We will continue to monitor these cases as we learn, remotely. We plan to return to in-person learning on Tuesday, October 13. If you are not contacted to direct your student to quarantine, your child should plan to return to school next week.

COVID-19 is a contagious viral illness that spreads in the air through coughing, sneezing, and talking. Recent information suggests COVID-19 is spread by people who are not showing symptoms. It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it, then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes. Symptoms include fever, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea.

Please watch your child for any symptoms of COVID-19 through October 19. If your child does develop symptoms, we urge you to get your child tested for COVID-19. Testing locations can be found using the COVID-19 Test Finder at https://www.michigan.gov/coronavirus. If your child tests positive for COVID-19 or is symptomatic and you do not wish to have them tested, keep him or her at home until they have been fever free for at least 24 hours and it has been more than ten days since the initial onset of symptoms.

For additional information regarding COVID-19, please visit the OCHD website at https://www.oakgov.com/health. If you have any questions, please feel free to Principal Beazley at (248) 969-1800.
