June 9, Message from Dr. Markavitch

Dear Oxford Schools Families and Staff,

As we bring the 2022-23 school year to a close, I want to say – thank you, Oxford. Thank you for the support and the work you have done on behalf of our students. Thank you for bringing me here to continue that work with you.  In my former position as Oakland Schools Superintendent, I knew that Oxford was a strong community where people grew up and stayed, came back, or moved to.  I also knew that the school district was at the top of the list for educational programs and student achievement.  So when I got the call asking that I consider coming to Oxford Community Schools as the superintendent, I had a sense of where I would be going – a good place with good people in a very difficult time.

I then came, and I then saw how much work had already been carefully and thoughtfully put in place for your recovery efforts. I am heartened to see that meeting the mental health needs of our students was the top priority with more supports in place than anything I have experienced anywhere I have worked. I learned that the layers of safety and security measures here are robust. And throughout my time here I have witnessed the desire to continuously make things better by improving policies, practices, and programs where needed. I also discovered the deep level of love, devotion, and commitment this community has within it for one another.  You truly are a remarkable and inspiring community, and I am very grateful to be a part of it.

As summer break begins, I encourage you to reflect on your beautiful community and cherish wonderful experiences with your children. Throughout the summer months, many of your Oxford Schools staff members will continue working hard to provide exciting opportunities for students.  Some of these are outlined below with attached fliers for details. I also encourage you to continue to look for emails from the e-flier system, Peachjar, full of activities from our community partners such as the All for Oxford Resiliency Center and the Oxford Addison Youth Assistance.
