December 19, MLK Jr. Day Essay Contest

Dear Oxford Community Schools Families,

On Monday, January 15, 2024, we want to take steps to acknowledge and honor Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy to connect, give, serve, or volunteer on this national day of service. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to take action or volunteer to improve their communities. Please click on the link below to access a list of ideas that can be considered to give, show kindness, serve, or volunteer.

Idea to spread kindness

In addition to inviting our community to participate in acts of kindness or service, we are also running an essay contest for students in DK-12. Please click on the links below to access the prompts.

DK-5

6-12

All essays are due no later than Wednesday, January 17, 2024. Essays are to be labeled with the student’s name, grade level and building. All essays should be submitted to the main office of your child’s school. Essays will be judged, and winners announced the week of February 5, 2024.

Additionally, we plan to reconvene the district’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee this spring and we hope that developing a meaningful day for our district in future MLK Jr. Days will be part of their charge.

We wanted to send the essay contest information to students who would like to get a head start on their submissions. We will also be sending a reminder the week we return from holiday break.

Sincerely,
Oxford Community Schools
