September 13, Remembrance Mural at OHS

Dear Oxford Schools Community:

Oxford High School students from the 2022-23 school year have been working with school staff members on the remembrance efforts of Justin, Hana, Tate, and Madisyn inside of the high school. The student group chose to work with mural artist Zach Curtis to design and create a 4 ft x 6 ft symbolic mural on canvas to honor and remember their lost classmates. The art piece will hang on the brick wall leading into the OHS cafeteria across from the media center. On behalf of these students, we are honored to announce that the artist has finished the Remembrance Mural and it is scheduled to be installed at the end of this week.

The artist the students commissioned designed the mural to look like a cork board with painted notes and pictures pinned on it. The pictures are reflective of the hand drawings which many in our community may already be familiar. They are the hand drawn images from each of the shirts that were designed in memory of the students last year: Hana’s Tree, Madisyn’s gum wrapper drawing, Justin’s wings, and Tate’s fishing boat image.

In addition to this student-centered, collectively created, indoor mural at OHS, we continue to collaborate with the families of Justin, Hana, Tate, and Madisyn in the planning of the community’s permanent memorial.
